Tesla will begin low production development of humanoid robots for the company’s internal use by the end of next year, CEO Elon Musk announced on Monday, July 22.
Musk wrote on his social media platform X that Tesla’s humanoid robots should “hopefully” be in high production in 2026. This marks a significant step in Tesla’s ambitious robotics program, aimed at revolutionizing both the tech and automotive industries.
Tesla’s Optimus, which was initially called Bumblebee, was first unveiled in September 2022. The project has garnered considerable attention for its potential to integrate advanced AI with practical robotics.
At the beginning of 2024, Tesla released a video of its second-generation robot folding a T-shirt, showcasing the progress made in developing versatile and functional humanoid robots.
Musk previously stated that he believes robot sales could eventually surpass Tesla’s vehicle sales, making robots a major component of the company’s revenue stream.
“I think Tesla is best positioned of any humanoid robot maker to be able to reach volume production with efficient inference on the robot itself,” Musk said. This statement underscores Tesla’s confidence in its technological advancements and market positioning.
According to research and analysis company GlobalData, the overall robotics market will be worth $218 billion by 2030. This prediction highlights the growing importance and potential profitability of the robotics industry.
Isabel Al-Dhahir, senior analyst at GlobalData, noted: “Advances in AI have enabled the development of robots, allowing them to become highly complex products rather than the stand-alone, fixed-function machines they used to be. This, in turn, has increased the number of roles that robots can perform. Cloud computing is central to this development to enable sensing, computation, and memory to be managed more rapidly, securely, and at scale.”
The development and deployment of humanoid robots like Optimus are expected to transform various operational aspects within Tesla and beyond, paving the way for future innovations in robotics and AI.
“Tesla will have humanoid robots for internal use in 2025, says Musk” was originally created and published by Verdict, a GlobalData-owned brand.
